ABA (Ternary) Form

ABA or Ternary Form is a form of music which is similar to Binary Form music. The main difference is that Ternary Form has 3 sections.

 

 

Think of this as a normal sandwich.

There can be many different looks of Ternary Form.

For section 1: the A section can be repeated as long as it is repeated before moving onto the B section.

For section 2: the B section can also be repeated as long as it is repeated before the A section comes back in.

Finally for section 3: the A section can be repeated again as many times as the composer wishes.

Therefore ABA or Ternary form can be recognized as ABA, AABA, ABBA, ABAA etc.
